Epicore sued over alleged ERP project failure
Whaley is suing Epicor for fraud, breach of contract, unfair trade and negligent misrepresentation
SYNCHRO’s comments:
Lessons to be learned; the client (Whaley’s) and the provider (Epicore) undertook to do business together. Nothing much unusual there, expectations were set and business commenced however this did not go well; what appears to be an accumulation of failures on many levels.
1 - Cost:
Installation in the main business centre and 12 branches for an estimated US$190,000 ending in an over budget of $1 million. Epicore promised that costs would not exceed the estimate by more than 10%
SYNCHRO comments:
A set budget is a critical factor of the contract and agreement; this is certainly NOT how we undertake business.
2 - Scripted Demo’s:
The client was assured the software would meet all of its requirements
Initial apparent shortcomings in Epicore’s software.
SYNCHRO Comment:
A sale at any cost! perhaps. Oh boy, now that is fatal. We wonder who sold this to Whaley?
3 - Mix of software vendors:
Apparently Epicore used another company, Evron Computer Systems to provide developed software. Whaley had to pay Evron to try and correct the defects.
SYNCHRO Comment:
As experts in a niche market, we would never involve an outside vendor to develop or design software. No one knows our businesses like we do. The client’s relationship and contract is with us. Not unlike a marriage requires total commitment.
4 - Epicore staff turnover:
no continuity with the implementation project.
SYNCHRO Comment:
Continuity is critical for the first 18 months of the project and implementation.
At SYNCHRO we have NO staff turnover. Each is valued and a critical member of the team. Their skill and expertize is what make us the global success we are today.
SYNCHRO’s Conclusion
We know that biggest is not always best. There are some important aspects which are key to doing good business, providing excellent service, maintaining strong client relationship after all in the ERP software industry it cannot be compared to selling washing machines. Expertise is being purchased and trust is an ethical commitment and is as implicit as the signature on the contract.
The large generic ERP vendors cannot develop close relationships, for them it is a numbers game.
There are ERP providers specializing entirely in an industry sector; these companies have knowledge and skill available and their customer base thrive as a result.
As specialists in our industry (Cast Metal) we come across generic ERP & MRP which neither does the job nor fits 50% of the requirement. The software is too generalized; companies running these systems actually think this is the norm, all companies must have the same problems!
It is not the norm and finding a system developed and designed for your business / industry can make the difference between average or an extremely successful enterprise.

SYNCHRO Comments:-
We have long understood this as a major issue which is little understood. Only after installation and the commitment of resource, expectation and many precious hours does a company then begin to realize the impact ‘A Generic ERP system’ has on the entire company. It is often described as a strait jacket. The flexibility, individual nuances which make companies and people unique in their jobs is no longer part of what it was. The software system is designed to streamline you down a path every step of the way.
We call it the McDonalds syndrome. Every one behaves in the same way, a mirror image of one another it is the way large ERP vendors sell 100,000 of systems. It is not feasible for them to develop and design the elements and learned values and characteristics which make ‘Joe Foundry Inc ‘ the success he is today.
SYNCHRO ERP work ceaselessly with clients. To start we have a software system specifically designed for the Cast Metal Industry. In 36 years we have implemented 1,000 of systems, each company with a passion and a desire for success.
SYNCHRO is not a one system fits all! And nor do we want it to be.

5 Things you should never say on the phone
The current VOCLAB report – Customers were unhappy with some of the phone support they were receiving from technology companies. Particularly automated components which route a call. Many just hang up!

Companies should not use ERP in Cloud
Businesses should not move their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to the cloud, it has been suggested.
Ian Anstey, head of SAP's Business ByDesign on-demand software range, told V3.co.uk that big companies should not put their ERP in the cloud because of the "risk and complexity".
He explained because of the risks involved, it is not worth large firms moving their "mission-critical applications into the cloud".
Mr Anstey said: "It is not proven to work, and it will be some time before they consider running an all-corporate cloud."
Moving ERP systems to the cloud could also have a major impact on the investments companies will have already made in their software, he added.
Independent consultancy firm Panorama Consulting Solutions recently said it would be conducting its annual ERP benchmark survey in a bid to discover more about the best ERP software packages used by companies, as well as their software-as-a-service ERP solutions.

*787 Dreamliner teaches Boeing costly lesson on outsourcing*
Response from Barbara Nolan
SYNCHRO ERP
'What goes around comes around'
When will we learn that cost is by no means the only factor to take into direct consideration. The financials continue to drive us beyond reasoning...the boeing 787 Dreamliner is such a stark example of what is wrong with chasing 'the most for less' I quote Boeings dream was to save money!
Reading the article it is quite frightening to think the repercussions were not thought through with what appears to be a real lack of planning and foresight.
Quote “Boeing executives now admit that the company's aggressive outsourcing put it in partnership with suppliers that weren't up to the job. They say Boeing didn't recognize that sending so much work abroad would demand more intensive management from the home plant, not less.”
Cultural differences ethics and business practices play a major role, you have to understand the way a culture think. Boeing assumed working practices mirror their own...Oh dear; what a very expensive assumption.
If we as a company managed our business with such careless forethought we would not be here today.
Got to go...get back to doing the very best job I can for our clients and Synchro.

Implementation & Training Costs
From the beginning of the New Year 2010
All Implementation costs have been reduced by 50%
For the 12 months from date of installation all training associated with implementation is now reduced by a total of 50%
MD Chris Collins
“ As a result of a great deal of feedback, we have decided to offer to all new customers this reduction as a show of total commitment to the Cast Metal Manufacturer. We know how tough it has been... many of those companies who now really need good solid systems are leaner in man power and so the need is even greater”

Good News for the Manufacturing
MANUFACTURERS are switching production back to the UK from overseas, amid concerns over quality and the high cost of freight, a survey has revealed.
The international legal firm Eversheds claimed the survey provided further evidence that the UK's "flexible" employment market meant "it suffers more in a recession but gains more in an upturn"...
