The Art and Science of Model Building

From Gundam to Warhammer: A Passionate Hobby

Building and painting models has been a cherished hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. The intricate details, the meticulous assembly, and the creative liberty taken while painting each model bring me immense joy and satisfaction. Among my favourite models to build are the iconic Gundam and Warhammer miniatures.

Gundam Models: A Journey into a Sci-Fi powerhouse

Gundam models, or Gunpla, offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of futuristic warfare. Each model kit, from the simplest Grade to the most complex Master Grade, provides a challenging yet rewarding experience. The process starts with carefully removing each part from the sprues, followed by the precise assembly of the pieces. The parts fit together with remarkable precision, thanks to the advanced engineering behind these kits.

Warhammer Miniatures
Warhammer miniatures transport hobbyists into a fantasy realm filled with epic battles and mythical creatures. The process of building these miniatures is just as intricate as Gundam models. It involves not only assembling the pieces but also customizing them to create unique characters. The painting process is where creativity truly shines, as each miniature can be brought to life with detailed and imaginative colour schemes.

Painting these models is an art form in itself. It requires patience, precision, and an eye for detail. Each model starts with a base coat, followed by layers of colours, shading, and highlights. The final touch of varnish not only protects the paint but also enhances the overall appearance of the model. The satisfaction of seeing a completed, beautifully painted model is unparalleled. I have been painting (or trying to) for over 30 years, and am still a mere beginner.

Interestingly, the production process for making these models shares several similarities with metal casting. Both processes start with the creation of a detailed Mold. In model making, plastic or resin is poured into the Mold to form the parts, whereas in our beloved metal casting, its molten metal is poured into the Mold to create the desired shape. The precision required in both processes is strikingly similar.

My love for building and painting models like Gundam and Warhammer has not only provided me with countless hours of enjoyment but has also given me a deeper appreciation for the intricate production processes behind these kits. The similarities to metal casting highlight the precision and craftsmanship involved in creating these miniaturized works of art. Each model, once completed, stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of hobbyists like myself, who find joy in both the art and science of model building.   And if you want to take a look at just HOW similar this is… take a look at this video…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wUyehmXkfs

Bye for now…

I had been away attending an exhibition (MACH 2018)

Get back home and need to go shopping. Start the car and a warning light comes up – Parking sensor failed.

It had not been anywhere and no damage where it was parked – on a drive – so I cancelled the warning.
